Admissions for Weekend Classes

HEROES Academy’s weekend classes serve gifted and high achieving students.  In order to take weekend classes at HEROES Academy, students must submit qualifying test scores.  Students without qualifying test scores may complete at Academic Evaluation at HEROES Academy to determine eligibility. 

Applying to our Microschool?

Students applying to HEROES Academy’s Microschool for Gifted and Talented students must submit qualifying test scores and a completed application packet.  Applicants must also complete an Academic Evaluation at HEROES Academy.

We accept applicants throughout the year.  Students may apply to join the HEROES Academy Microschool mid-year.

Applying to Weekend Classes

Students may submit scores from any of the following tests and assessments to qualify for HEROES Academy.

 

In addition to submitting qualifying test scores, all students must complete an Academic Evaluation to determine class placement.  

WISC-V

A minimum standard score of 130 or higher on the General Ability Index (GAI) or Full Scale OR A minimum standard score of 130 on the Nonverbal section AND at least one of the following: Verbal Verbal Comprehension Fluid Reasoning

Stanford-Binet

A minimum standard score of 130 or higher on BOTH the Verbal and Nonverbal sections

CogAT

An age percentile rank of at least the 90th percentile on both the Verbal and Quantitative
OR
A Composite (VQN) in at least the 90th percentile

Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities

A standard score of 130 or higher

At HEROES Academy, we believe that gifted and talented students’ access to resources shouldn’t be limited by their ability to access IQ testing and other assessments often used to identify gifted and talented students.  As such, HEROES Academy also permits students to apply to HEROES Academy’s weekend classes as high-achieving students.  We ask parents to use their best judgement to determine whether HEROES Academy’s weekend classes are a good fit for their child(ren), and we recommend scheduling a call with us to aid in the decision-making process.  A list of acceptable achievement tests are included below.

 

Percentiles must be for their standard age-based grade level.

In the case of grade accelerated students, percentiles must be based on their current grade placement OR their standard age-based grade level.

 

This does not apply to our Microschool program.  Students MUST submit an acceptable ability test to be considered for admission into HEROES Academy’s microschool.

NJSLA (New Jersey State Learning Assessment)*

Performance Level 5 in BOTH English Language Arts and Mathematics

 

Student scores must be for their standard age-based grade level.  

NWEA MAP (Northwest Evaluation Assessment Measures of Academic Progress)

NWEA MAP Mathematics greater than or equal to the 90th percentile AND 

NWEA MAP Reading greater than or equal to the 90th percentile

 

Terra Nova

Terra Nova Mathematics greater than or equal to the 90th percentile.

Terra Nova Reading English Language Arts greater than or equal to the 90th percentile.

Renaissance STARR Test

STARR Mathematics greater than or equal to the 90th percentile.

STARR Reading English Language Arts greater than or equal to the 90th percentile

* Students may submit NJSLA scores to be considered for our Middle School Math Boot Camp. NJSLA Scores on their own are not sufficient for admittance into our regular weekend classes.

Applying to Weekend Classes

1. Submit Qualifying Test scores

Submit Qualifying Test Scores to HEROES Academy. We'll review them and set up a time to talk.

2. Academic Evaluation

Every student must complete an academic evaluation to assess their math, reading, and writing skills. We use the results of this test to determine each child's class placement and curriculum plan.

3. Enroll

HEROES Academy accepts students throughout the year on a rolling admission. After your child's academic evaluation, you'll receive class placement and registration details.
